Song #2 - Sleigh Ride

December 2
Song #2

"Sleigh Ride"

Huh. I didn't realize how much dancing I do in December until I pondered this next song on my list - Sleigh Ride! Seriously, how can you not want to start dancing around - or at least tapping your toes along with the jingle bells - when this song starts? I just can't help myself! (Never apologize for your Christmas dancing.) Once again, my ultimate favorite version is sung by Amy Grant. Part of the reason I love this version is because it's all within range of my singing voice! Johnny Mathis' version is equally delightful, but it gets to a part in the song where I either have to go high or low, and I can never quite make the transition.

I have never actually been on a sleigh ride (sad!) but this song sure makes it sound enticing! Snow is falling and friends are calling? Rosy cheeks and snuggling close together? Coffee and pumpkin pie? Sign me up!

Growing up, the only part of the song I didn't understand was the reference to "a picture print by Currier and Ives." Thanks, Mom, for explaining it to me! Would you like to see a sleigh ride picture print by Currier and Ives? Here it is, courtesy of www.green-wood.com.

The actual name of this print is "The Road Winter." Fun fact: this print was featured on a U.S. Postage stamp in 1974. Guess how much postage was? 10 CENTS!! Wow, what a deal! Wish postage still cost that! Which reminds me, I need to get my Christmas letters in the mail!
